Our Beginning
In the aftermath of Katrina, we returned to find our clinic severely damaged. Or so it seemed at first glance. However, even though the front of the building was gone, there was miraculously, very little water damage inside. While standing in the parking lot about 20 minutes after arriving, a car raced in and the people jumped out crying “thank God you’re open, our Boxer has been seizuring for over an hour and we’ve been driving around trying to find a vet open!!!” We knew then that we had to stay and be open.
We then began seeing patient after patient with serious medical needs but no
means to pay. Most of the people were homeless and jobless at this point. Most
of them were from New Orleans, Slidell, and the Mississippi coast and now displaced
wondering where they would be going from day to day. We knew that we could not
turn them away so we just treated them with whatever was needed. It became obvious
that we would need help to continue doing this, so Deb and I contacted our friends
and founded the Veterinary Relief Foundation. Shortly thereafter, we started
receiving donations to ensure that the care of animals in need in the aftermath
of Katrina could continue.
